Eating it...

I still consider myself a newbie on these things. Does anyone have any tips on how to fall properly without hurting yourself?

Wear kneed pads and wrist guards. They will enable you to take some good spills without hurting yourself too much.

      just lead with yer chin.
      kidding....
i practice falling (forward) by bending at the knees first, allowing your knees (padded, I hope) to hit first, then the torso follows. I also flex at the elbow, bringing my hands up to my face. Torso follows the knees and I slightly roll as well. probably the biggest mistake is to stick your arms out there to catch yourself..
falling backwards...try not to. if it happens, as you go to fall, bend at the knees deeply (squat) and curl, so that when you hit you can roll a bit.
there are other techniques out there...and i think it is very wise to practice falling. always a question of when not if.

One thing to add on the philosophy of falling... Deep squat, place hands on the knees, whatever it takes to train your self not to "pop up" or arch your back. After teaching a few people and watching a few falls, popping up and throwing arms out seems to be the natural body response which is entirely wrong. By lowering your center of gravity recovery is sometimes possible Or the fall is simply not as far.

Side note on wrist guards: most people I have seen using them are using old skating wrist guards. For what it's worth, these types of wrist guards are designed to redirect energy by sliding while protecting your precious skin from roadrash.

Any height up to 4ft, falling forward onto knees then sitting back onto your stilts is least damaging so long as you keep your arms clear. Sticking your arms out to the front will either break your wrists or your collar bones.
4ft to 7ft try to fall on somebody else. Over 7 ft try not to fall as any method will hurt and will probably be damaging

always warm yourself up before and after. doing a yoga routine or full body stretch before will help and you're body will thank you if you stretch afterward.

I always figured I'd step out and kneel down, but I hadn't realized the risers keep your knee from folding completely. I'm still recovering after a wipeout on Halloween when I wiped out and folded my knee. It's like a pen getting folded in a book. It basically dislocated my knee which left me with a mild sprain.

Sounds like the straps are too high then.

Use an allen wrench to lower the strap height so it wraps around your calf instead of the base of your knee. I did that just because the velcro on the new models was chafing the back of my knee, but your situation sounds like an even better reason.

Look into martial arts falling techniques. Your shoulder and your hips take impact well so if you can bend your knees to lower your center or gravity and then twist a bit to land first on hip then on shoulder in a roll you should be able to minimize damage. Never ever land with your hands flat in front of you. Never. Ever.
